About the Periodic Table
The periodic table organizes all 118 known chemical elements by their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties. Elements in the same column (group) share similar characteristics. The table was first proposed by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 and has been refined as new elements were discovered and synthesized.
Element Categories
Elements are classified into categories including alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, post-transition metals, metalloids, nonmetals, halogens, noble gases, lanthanides, and actinides. Each category shares distinct physical and chemical properties.
